| Barcode Technology |
|
The basic principle on which barcode technology works is symbology means representation of information on barcodes. Symbology is defined as collection of various black and white symbols used to store useful information including product name, product id, product code, product description, product company name and other important information concerning with manufactured products.
In Barcode system technology, the encoded information printed on barcodes are read by scanner to convert encrypted data into binary form so that it should be easily understood by the computer machine to get the product details. Barcode symbol is a collection of black bars and white spaces responsible for storing lots of information about corresponding product or items.
Types of symbologies
Barcode Technology most commonly implements two types of symbologies in market consisting of:
1. Linear barcode symbology
2. Two Dimensional barcode symbology
Linear Barcode symbology
Linear barcode symbology or one dimensional barcode symbology refers to a succession of changeable widths of analogous bars and spaces. Most generally acceptable linear barcode symbologies are Codabar, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128 A, Code 128 B, Code 128 C, Extended Code 39, Extended Code 93, EAN UCC 128, MSI Plessey, UPC A, UPC E, Intelligent Mail, Industrial 2 of 5, Interleaved 2 of 5, ISBN 10, ISBN 13, Planet, Postnet and many more.
Two Dimensional Barcode Symbology
In 2D barcode symbology, data or information is encoded in both height and width of the barcode symbol. These symbologies are scanned by CCD or laser scanners in comparison to light pen scanners in case of one dimensional barcode symbology. 2D symbologies store data much greater than the linear barcode symbologies and hence more useful in encoding large amount of data for item tracking. Generally used 2D barcode symbologies are Data Marix, Code 1, Code 16K, Compact Matrix Code, QR Code, Uniscode, PDF417, PaperDisk, PDMark and others.
A linear barcode symbology only contains a short sequence of black and white bars that is responsible for storing only reference data as an id or code which when related with stored database on computer gives the entire details of that product or item. For example in case of car license plate which itself does not give any important information but when inserted into motor vehicle database, it provides all relevant information about the car to which it is connected to.
Barcode Technology gives an effective and reliable way to track inventory items, departmental products and many more.
